Motorists set to benefit as fuel prices fall from January 7

Motorists will see relief at the filling stations as of tomorrow, after the Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources confirmed fuel price reductions for January 2026.

The adjustment follows lower international oil prices, a stronger rand and easing global fuel supply pressures, particularly in the Northern Hemisphere.

South Africa’s fuel prices are reviewed monthly and are influenced by international crude oil prices, refined fuel costs, shipping expenses and exchange rate movements. During the period under review, Brent crude oil prices declined amid global oversupply following increased production by both OPEC+ and non-OPEC oil producers.

International petroleum product prices also eased, while the rand strengthened against the US dollar, lowering the cost of fuel imports. These factors contributed to lower recoveries in local fuel pricing during December.

The slate levy, which balances over- and under-recoveries in fuel pricing, will remain unchanged at zero cents per litre. The cumulative slate balance for petrol and diesel stood at a positive R3.3 billion at the end of November 2025.

Liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) prices will move higher due to tighter global supply, while quarterly adjustments to octane differentials mean petrol prices may vary between fuel-pricing zones.

Fuel prices differ between inland and coastal regions. The full official price schedule for all Magisterial District Zones is scheduled to be published today, January 6.
