Bowls tournament honours a Barberton legend
Twelve teams from Mpumalanga and Gauteng gathered in Barberton, showing off both their skill and camaraderie.
The Barberton Bowls Club recently honoured a local legend during their annual Dick Terburgh Memorial Tournament, held over the long weekend at their greens in Barberton. This popular event, now a regular fixture on the regional bowls calendar, pays tribute to Dick Terburgh, a long-time member, dedicated chairman, and passionate supporter of the club, who passed away during the Covid pandemic.
According to Anne-Marie van der Ham, the tournament was established in remembrance of Terburgh’s unwavering commitment to bowls and his 45 years of service to the club. “We are indeed blessed with such love from the players,” she said. “In tribute to the memory of a legendary figure. Thank you to everyone for making this a great tournament!”
Twelve teams from across Mpumalanga and Gauteng descended on Barberton for the event, showcasing not only their skills on the greens but also their camaraderie off the field. The players were treated to more than just sport. Those present also had the chance to witness colourful paragliders painting the skies above Barberton, creating a festive, community atmosphere.
After a spirited series of matches, the winning team emerged: Ben Enslin, Anne-Marie and Charl van der Ham, Diane Enslin, and Wilna and Jaco du Plooy. Their teamwork and consistency set them apart on the day.
In second place were Pat Arnott, Lynette Boshoff, Kosie Smit, Gasheen Henwood, Len Botha and Marie Saayman. The third-place team consisted of Madeleine de Clerk, Hannelie Wentzel, Joao Richards, Johan Nel, Lorraine Victor and Piet Smit.
There was more to celebrate as Lynette Boshoff walked away with a beautiful wooden bench, the lucky winner of a raffle draw held during the tournament.
Anne-Marie concluded by expressing heartfelt thanks to the many sponsors who made the day a success. “A big thank you to all our sponsors who made the day possible. We appreciate your generosity,” she said. The event stood as a meaningful tribute to a man whose presence and passion continue to inspire Barberton’s bowls community, while also reinforcing the town’s reputation for hosting warm, welcoming sporting events.
