Firearms, drugs and a suspected stolen vehicle were seized during police operations across several areas in the Western Cape.
WESTERN-CAPE - Several arrests were made across the Western Cape on December 23 during Safer Festive Season crime prevention operations.
The arrests took place while Western Cape Provincial Commissioner Lt Gen (Adv.) Thembisile Patekile was visiting various operational areas.

In the Muizenberg policing precinct, Public Order Police officers heard gunshots coming from the Overcome Heights informal settlement while on patrol. Police drove towards the sound of the shots and saw four men carrying firearms running from the area. At a house in Dawn Road, Seawinds, officers traced two of the suspects inside the premises. A 9mm Taurus pistol with 12 rounds of ammunition and 70 Mandrax tablets was found in their possession. The two suspects, aged 18 and 36, were arrested for possession of an unlicensed firearm, ammunition and drugs.
In Philippi, members attached to Operation Shanela II arrested a 23-year-old man for drug possession. Police were conducting stop-and-search operations in Lonedown Road when they noticed a man behaving suspiciously as a police vehicle approached. A search revealed 20 sachets of tik in his possession.
A 33-year-old man was arrested in Delft South for possession of a suspected stolen motor vehicle. Operation Shanela II members acted after a complainant reported that he had opened a hijacking case at Delft SAPS earlier in December and later received a demand of R5,000 for the release of his vehicle. Police proceeded to an address at the Gushindoda informal settlement, where one suspect was found in possession of the vehicle. The suspect was arrested, and the red Nissan Magnite was taken to the Stikland Vehicle Crime Investigation Unit for further processing.
In Ravensmead, police conducting stop-and-search duties acted on information about a person allegedly selling drugs in the area. At the address, a 35-year-old man was arrested and found to be in possession of 20 sachets of tik, seven Mandrax tablets, 28 half Mandrax tablets and 26 quarter Mandrax tablets.
Elsies River SAPS detectives were in the Leonsdale area when they received a complaint of a shooting in progress. While travelling to the scene, officers noticed a man running in Debden Avenue and followed him to a nearby house. He was apprehended at the premises, where occupants confirmed that he did not reside there. A search of the passage led to the recovery of a 9mm pistol with 13 rounds of ammunition near the trees. The man was arrested for possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition. Further investigation revealed that the firearm had been reported stolen in Sinoville on September 9, 2022.
Once charged, the suspects are expected to appear in the Muizenberg, Athlone, Blue Downs and Goodwood Magistrates’ courts.
