Before putting pen to paper on Narboth Mathole, I did what every journalist who wants to write an honest piece should do. I had to sit properly with the music. After what felt like hours, not because I was forced, but because I so loved what I heard, one thing became very clear: Narboth Mathole is a name worth remembering.

In a line-up which promises to be jam-packed with strong personalities at the OppiDam Music Festival, happening the weekend of October 2 and 3, Narboth will arrive with what can best be described as poetry in motion, music built on story, rhythm and clear intent.

The Springs-based singer with his beautiful, inviting smile, who is a songwriter, musician and producer, has been steadily building his career in recent years, developing a sound shaped by contemporary folk, Afro-pop and acoustic influences. While listeners may pick up traces reminiscent of artists such as Tracy Chapman, Matthew Mole, Zahara and Mafikizolo, the overall identity that comes through remains unmistakably his own.

At 33, Narboth is not chasing quick hits. His approach is measured and deliberate, something he sums up in his own words as “The art of purpose, professionalism, and destiny.” On paper the phrase may read ambitious, yet in his music it translates into carefully structured songs that carry a clear emotional thread.

His latest single, All In, leans into themes of love and commitment, supported by warm vocals and clean, layered production. It is the kind of track that settles in gradually and rewards a proper listen.

Narboth is set to take the stage on October 2 at Vygeboom Dam.

If you appreciate artists who let the music speak as much as the performance itself, Narboth Mathole may well be one of the names people will be talking about for a long time once the weekend is over.

Make it a weekend to remember at OppiDam. Book early and don’t miss out.
