STANDERTON - An intelligence-driven operation led to the arrest of a 35-year-old control prosecutor yesterday, for corruption and defeating the ends of justice.

According to information received, the prosecutor is alleged to have solicited bribes from suspects in an exchange for cases to either be withdrawn or struck off the court roll. The police investigated the suspect’s activities, and apprehended him after he had allegedly received an undisclosed amount of cash from a suspect in exchange for the withdrawal of a case.

The Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police in Mpumalanga, Lt Gen Mondli Zuma, has welcomed the arrest and commended the police for their sterling work. Zuma said the wheels of justice cannot be allowed to stop rolling by corrupt elements within the system. “The law must take its course without fear or favour, and our efforts of rooting out corruption are continuing to yield positive results.”

The suspect is expected to appear in the Standerton Magistrate's Court on Thursday.
