Sheer willpower enables injured paraglider to defy the odds

On June 29, 2018, during the annual paragliding open held in Barberton, Kelvin van Baalen (22), flew into power lines. A fellow paraglider witnessed the events and provided a location pin which enabled rescue workers to rush to his aid. After his father had carried him to the ambulance, Kelvin was then airlifted to Milpark Hospital’s burn unit. Kelvin was in a coma for more than a month and, after countless surgeries and suffering from unbearable pain, as well as spending 400 days in ICU, he is still the amazing and positive young man he used to be before this accident changed his life.

"Hard to believe, but you - miracle child - has defied the odds!" Astrid Christianson.
“Kelvin started flying at a very young age and has been an awesome part of our local annual paragliding competition. He has been a huge inspiration such a go getter and fearless. We're all extremely proud of you!” Andrea Botha.
“Heartwarming to see you out in the sun. Onwards and upwards Kelvin!” Mike Waller.
“Kelvin you are going to be the greatest motivator in South Africa and I’m so proud to know you. Well done!” Judy Moritz.
