There is something almost rebellious about sleeping on your car roof. Not in a "look at me" kind of way, but in the sense that you can pull off the road when the light is right, climb a ladder, and claim a view most people drive straight past

For travellers who choose freedom over five-star frills, rooftop tents from The RoofPod turn almost any car into a mobile base camp.

Rooftop tents for The RoofPod are designed for people who move fast and pack light. The range includes the SoloPod for solo travellers, the CoziPod for couples, and the ComfyPod for those who want extra space without extra weight. All models are universally compatible with most vehicles, from compact hatchbacks and sedans to SUVs, 4×4s and bakkies, as long as the vehicle is fitted with standard roof bars or racks.

RoofPods fit most major roof rack brands such as Alu-Cab, Front Runner and Thule, provided the load rating and bar length are correct. The tents require two crossbars spaced  90 cm - 110m apart. The CoziPod needs bars at least 1250 mm long, while the ComfyPod requires 1350 mm.

The key number to check is your dynamic load rating, which refers to the weight your roof can carry while driving. Static load, when parked, is typically seven to ten times higher, meaning the combined weight of the tent and one or two sleepers is well within limits for most vehicles.

Weighing between 30 and 45 kg, RoofPods are among the lightest rooftop tents available. This makes them ideal for smaller cars such as the Suzuki Jimny, VW Polo, Fiat Panda and Toyota RAV4, while also suiting larger vehicles like the Audi Cayenne, VW Touareg. The low weight improves stability, reduces vehicle strain, and helps keep fuel consumption changes to a minimum.

Despite their lightweight design, RoofPods do not compromise on comfort. Each tent is 2360 mm long with a clever frame bend that maximises sleeping space. Inside, you will find a 75 mm high-density mattress, with enough room to leave bedding packed away when travelling. Sleeping bags, pillows and duvets can stay inside, saving time and boot space.

Built from ripstop canvas with a protective PVC cover, RoofPods are waterproof, wind-resistant and dust sealed. They are designed for long-distance and can handle dirt roads, heat and changing weather with ease.

Installation takes two people and only a few minutes, giving you more time to focus on your surroundings and the simple pleasure of sleeping under the stars.
