DStv Premium drops to R799 on 24-month deal
DStv Premium is getting a cheaper monthly option, but there is one important condition attached to the deal. The new price is linked to a 24-month contract, which means subscribers will have to weigh the saving against a longer commitment.

DStv Premium customers can pay R799 a month for the satellite service from September 17, but the lower price is tied to a 24-month contract. The existing month-to-month satellite subscription remains R979, leaving customers with a choice between the discounted fixed-term agreement and the standard monthly option. DStv says the R799 contract price includes the Access Fee.
Existing Premium subscribers are not being transferred to the new contract automatically. Customers can remain on their current Premium subscription, while those who want the R799 satellite price can choose the 24-month agreement. The offer forms part of DStv’s revised package structure, which takes effect in South Africa on September 17.
DStv Stream Premium provides another option at R799 a month without the two-year satellite commitment. The streaming package is available on a month-to-month basis and requires an internet connection instead of a satellite installation. Internet and data costs are separate from the DStv subscription, which consumers should take into account when comparing the two options.
Signing a fixed-term agreement does not prevent a consumer from cancelling before the contract expires. Section 14 of the Consumer Protection Act permits consumers to cancel fixed-term agreements by giving 20 business days’ notice, although the supplier can impose a reasonable cancellation penalty. The Consumer Goods and Services Ombud says the penalty can take factors such as services already provided and discounts granted for the intended contract period into account.
At current prices, the new satellite contract reduces the monthly Premium subscription by R180 compared with the R979 month-to-month option. The difference comes with a 24-month commitment, while the R799 streaming subscription remains available month-to-month. Customers considering the satellite offer should therefore check the fixed-term conditions, including any charges that could apply to early cancellation, before signing the agreement.
