KOMATIPOORT – Gibson Mutero (46) appeared in the Komatipoort Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, January 14, on a charge of possession of counterfeit goods. He was arrested at the Lebombo Border Post whilst transporting the illegal goods from Mozambique to Johannesburg. Members of the Hawks Serious Commercial Crime Investigation Unit of Mpumalanga collaborated with the Lebombo Border Police and Customs to secure his apprehension.

The value of the goods, which were being transported in a Volvo Truck with two trailers, is estimated at about R3,3 million. The consignment was concealed among sawdust. The stash included branded sneakers, sandals, school bags and jeans, sporting brand names such as Nike, Adidas, Puma and Redbat. The truck and trailers, together with their content, were taken to SARS’ Customs Warehouse for safe-keeping.

Mutero was released on bail of R4 500, after his place of residence and employment addresses were confirmed.The case has been postponed to March 3, pending further investigation and the obtaining of statements.
