A man who was out on parole for a 2005 rape conviction when eight-year-old Daniel Jamneck was killed has been sentenced to two terms of life imprisonment by the Western Cape High Court yesterday. The convicted man cannot be identified because doing so would reveal the identity of his son, who testified during the trial. The court further ordered that his particulars be entered into the National Register for Sex Offenders.

A convicted sex offender has no rights. To anything. Full stop.

The public has a right to know who is living in its communities. Parents have a right to know if a convicted child sex offender has moved into their neighbourhood. Schools and sports clubs should not have to rely solely on a closed government database to protect the children in their care.

The court found that the offences were committed on June 15, 2023, while Daniel was attending a sleepover at a friend's home in Peerless Park North, Kraaifontein. The man was convicted on charges including murder, rape and sexual assault.

The court imposed life imprisonment for Daniel's rape and a further life sentence for his murder. He also received an eight-year prison sentence for sexual assault and 10 years' imprisonment relating to the 2005 rape conviction. The sentences will run concurrently.

Court proceedings established that the offender had entered into a plea agreement with the State following the 2005 rape conviction and was serving a correctional supervision sentence when the offences against Daniel were committed.
