West Coast community invited to help fill empty plates this Mandela Day
Siyabonga Care Village in Vredenburg will host a Mandela Day food drive on July 17, inviting businesses, schools, churches, families and community groups to donate non-perishable food, fresh produce and other essential grocery items.
VREDENBURG, Western Cape - For more than two decades, Siyabonga Care Village has been providing more than a place of safety for vulnerable people on the West Coast. This non-profit organisation has become a centre where abused women, vulnerable children and people with disabilities receive care, while many are also given the opportunity to rebuild their lives through skills development and empowerment.
Alongside its residential care facilities, daycare centres and community programmes, the organisation places a strong emphasis on equipping people with practical skills that help restore confidence and independence. Employment creation and personal development also form part of its work, with opportunities aimed at helping beneficiaries build a more secure future.
The scale of the need remains significant. Information released by Siyabonga Care Village indicates that approximately 330 people are assisted every day, while about 990 meals are served daily, amounting to roughly 27,000 meals every month.
To help support that work, the organisation will host a Mandela Day food drive on July 17, inviting residents of Vredenburg and surrounding communities to donate non-perishable food, fresh produce and other essential grocery items.
With several weeks still remaining before Mandela Day, community members have an opportunity to plan ahead by setting food aside in advance. Every contribution, no matter how small, will help ensure that Siyabonga Care Village can continue providing meals and support to those who rely on its services.
Residents are also encouraged to visit the care village on July 17 to spend time with staff and beneficiaries and learn more about the work being done in the community.
